CEREC® is a CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) system that can create fully custom crowns, bridges, and porcelain veneers in a single visit. This advanced imaging system takes digital impressions of your teeth, which direct computer-guided milling tools in creating restorations from a single block of porcelain selected to match the natural shade of your teeth. What Is CEREC® Technology?
CEREC® incorporates the same technological principles used to design and manufacture everything from satellites to motor vehicles since the 1980s. In essence, the product is designed in the digital realm, and computerized manufacturing tools create the physical version based on the virtual design. In our office, CEREC® captures a three-dimensional digital impression of your smile, and Dr. Smith can then adjust these images on a chairside computer. With CEREC®, there is no need for the messy dental putty traditionally used to take dental impressions. If you are receiving a crown or veneer, CEREC® will create your restoration based on these images within the span of a single appointment. If you are receiving orthodontic treatment, Dr. Smith will use these images to determine the tooth movement necessary to properly align your bite.
How CEREC® Can Improve Orthodontic Care
Our office is unique because we often use CEREC® to plan treatment involving braces and clear aligner trays. We will measure your entire dental arch with the digital scanner. Next, we will use these images to design your oral appliance. In addition to traditional orthodontic treatment, we can supply a device to expand your arches, reposition your lower jaw, or both. For accurate results, Dr. Smith must plan these appliances on a dental model. With CEREC®, he can simply scan your jaw and design your device on the computer in one visit.
CEREC® and Dental Implants
CEREC® technology also enhances the process of receiving an implant-supported restoration. Dental implants are titanium posts designed to replace lost tooth roots. Traditionally, a crown is designed to fit a dental implant after placement. CEREC® allows us to first design the crown, and plan the placement strategy based on the restoration.
